Why Maldivian Students Choose Malaysia
Three reasons studying in Malaysia works especially well if you're coming from the Maldives.
Affordable, Recognised Degrees
Tuition typically runs USD 3,000–8,000 a year at institutes like APU and INTI — a fraction of equivalent UK, US or Australian tuition — while the degree itself is built on the same globally recognised pathways.
Low Cost of Living, Familiar Comforts
Living costs run around USD 150–400 a month. Malaysia's Muslim-majority population also means halal food and prayer facilities are the norm, not the exception — a practical comfort many Maldivian families weigh heavily.
Under 5 Hours from Home
AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air all fly direct from Malé (MLE) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) in around 4 hours 40 minutes — far closer than a UK or Australian degree, and easy for parents to visit.

The questions we hear most often from students and parents in the Maldives.
What qualifications do I need to apply from the Maldives?
Most Maldivian applicants apply with a GCE O-Level (IGCSE) result from Grade 10 and, for degree-level entry, GCE A-Level results from Grades 11–12 — both issued through Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel and administered locally by the Department of Public Examinations. These are widely recognised by Malaysian institutes for direct entry or via a Foundation programme, depending on your grades and chosen course.
Do I need IELTS if I studied in English?
Many institutes accept English-medium O-Level/A-Level transcripts in place of IELTS, or offer their own internal English placement test instead. Requirements vary by institute and programme, so this is one of the first things we confirm during your free evaluation.
How do I get from Malé to Kuala Lumpur?
AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia all operate non-stop flights between Velana International Airport (MLE) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), with a scheduled flight time of roughly 4 hours 35 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes.
What visa do I need to study in Malaysia?
All international students, regardless of nationality, apply through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS): your institute applies for a Visa Approval Letter (VAL) on your behalf before you travel, and you're issued a Student Pass after a medical check-up within 7 days of arrival. We guide you through every step of this process.
What currency are tuition fees quoted in?
Malaysian institutes typically quote and invoice fees in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), with USD estimates commonly used for international comparison. We'll confirm exact figures and payment options for your specific programme during your consultation.
Can I work part-time while studying?
Yes — international students on a valid Student Pass may work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) during scheduled semester breaks, subject to your institute's and EMGS's current rules.
